Christopher A. Scott died after tractor-trailer went off Chesapeake Bay Bridge-Tunnel

The driver of a tractor-trailer that went overboard was found dead inside the truck’s cab on the second day of a huge search and rescue operation in the waters beneath the Chesapeake Bay Bridge-Tunnel.

Around 1:50 p.m., Henrico County resident Christopher A. Scott, 36, was going north from Virginia Beach toward the Eastern Shore. According to bridge-tunnel officials, the truck he was operating slid down the side of the bridge on Thursday, roughly a mile from Chic’s Beach.

The Virginia Beach Fire Department, Virginia Beach Police, and the U.S. Coast Guard were among the more than a dozen search and rescue agencies that went on the scene. USCG Captain Jennifer Stockwell informed The Pilot that divers were still searching as of Friday midday.

According to a statement from Jeff Holland, Executive Director of the CBBT, “the thoughts and prayers of everyone at the CBBT are with the family and loved ones of Mr. Scott during this difficult time.”

According to CBBT officials, the accident’s cause is still a mystery, and the Chesapeake Bay Bridge-Tunnel Authority Police are still conducting an investigation.

According to a press release from the Chesapeake Bay Bridge and Tunnel District, Crofton Diving, based in Portsmouth, recovered the truck from the waters beneath the bridge about 3 p.m. Scott was later named by officials in a news release.

According to the press announcement, the vehicle belonged to Keep It Moving 22, LLC, a moving and storage business with headquarters in Mechanicsville, Maryland.

Recovery operations were difficult because the tractor-trailer was flooded between the northbound and southbound bridge portions, “making it a more complicated recovery between the trestles,” Stockwell said. It had to be moved to the southbound span’s west side.

Stockwell claimed that after being fitted up with lifting straps by divers, the truck was pulled from the ocean by a crane barge and brought to shore for inspection.

While CBBT maintenance workers continue to fix guardrail and curb damage, one lane of northbound traffic is still available near the accident scene. Until the repairs, which are anticipated to take roughly a week, can be finished, the left travel lane will be blocked off.
