However, when he came out to his parents two weeks later, they were in denial, feeling it was okay to be gay but not trans. She also helped his family understand his situation, and while it took them a long time to come to terms with his sexuality, especially for his mother, they eventually began helping him with the transition by calling him Eric, using 'he', and taking him to gender clinics for hormone therapies.
