It is with a heavy heart we share the untimely passing of one of the Canadian historians who served at York University for decades.

Irving Abella, a historian and Jewish community leader who pioneered research on Canada’s antisemitic immigration policy in the 1930s and 1940s and the subsequent decision to close the door to European Jews fleeing the Holocaust, has passed on.

Abella died after a long illness and is said to have died the day after his 82nd birthday, on Sunday.

He was survived by his wife Rosalie Silberman Abella, a Canadian jurist who was appointed to the Supreme Court of Canada in August 2004 and his two grown up sons Jacob and Zachary .
