James MacEgan, a hostage, died, and his wife was injured in the shooting that occurred on April 6, 2023, at Mahany Park in Roseville, California. The incident happened when Eric Abril, the suspect, fled from the police and took two hostages at the park.

Abril is facing felony charges for his actions during the incident. The California Highway Patrol (CHP) was pursuing him to execute a search warrant related to another shooting incident on a freeway.

At around 12:30 pm, a CHP task force officer reported hearing shots fired, and a CHP officer executing a warrant was injured. Abril, still armed, took two people hostage and got into a shootout with the police, which resulted in him being hurt and taken into custody.

Two other people were shot during the incident, and one of them, James MacEgan, died on the scene. The CHP officer has been discharged from the hospital, but the other hostage remains in critical condition.

Abril has a lengthy criminal history in Santa Clara County dating back to 2007.
