Janelle Monáe Robinson, an American singer, rapper, and actress, was born on December 1, 1985.

She’s signed to Atlantic Records as well as her own label, Wondaland Arts Society. Monáe has been nominated for eight Grammy Awards. In 2010, Monáe received an MTV Video Music Award and an ASCAP Vanguard Award.

Monáe received the Billboard Women in Music Rising Star Award in 2015, as well as the Trailblazer of the Year Award in 2018. Monáe became a CoverGirl spokesperson in 2012. In honor of her artistry and activism, Boston City Council designated October 16, 2013, as “Janelle Monáe Day” in the city of Boston, Massachusetts.

Michael Robinson Summers, her father, was a truck driver. Monáe’s parents divorced when she was a toddler, and her mother later married a postman. Monáe’s younger sister, Kimmy, is the result of her mother’s remarriage.
