The Carolina Panthers team revealed on Wednesday night that former owner and founding member Jerry Richardson had passed away at the age of 86.

The reason of death was not disclosed by the team.

The Baltimore Colts chose halfback Richardson, who attended Wofford College, 154th overall in the 1958 NFL Draft.

However, due to a financial disagreement, he left the league after his second season and went back to Spartanburg, South Carolina, where he began a business job.

When the NFL granted Carolina a franchise in 1993, Richardson became the first former NFL player since George Halas to be the owner of a club. 1995 marked the Panthers’ debut campaign.

“Jerry Richardson’s accomplishments to professional football in the Carolinas are historic,” Panthers owners David and Nicole Tepper said in a statement.

“He changed the sports landscape in the area when the Panthers arrived in 1995 and provided the local NFL fans a squad to root for.

“He treated me extremely graciously when I bought the team, and I appreciate that. Rosalind, the complete Richardson family, and their loved ones have our sincere condolences, along with Nicole and I. We wish them solace and peace.

The Panthers made it to two Super Bowls and three NFC championship games under Richardson.
