James “Jimmie” Ward, a free safety for the San Francisco 49ers in the National Football League, was born on July 18, 1991. (NFL). In the first round of the 2014 NFL Draft, the 49ers selected him out of Northern Illinois, where he played college football.

Ward, who was born in Racine, Wisconsin, attended Davidson High School in Mobile, Alabama. As a senior, he led the Warriors in tackles with 101, 73 of which were solo, as Davidson went 10-3 and advanced to the state quarterfinals, earning team Defensive MVP honors. Ward also had eight pass breakups, an interception, two fumbles forced, and three recovered. He also had three quarterback sacks and three blocked kicks. Ward had 93 tackles as a junior, seven pass breakups, and five interceptions. He also forced two fumbles and blocked two kicks. Caron Butler, a former NBA player, is his cousin.

From 2010 to 2013, Ward studied at Northern Illinois University. As a true freshman in 2010, Ward participated in all 14 games while also blocking a school-record three punts. He was named the Huskies’ Special Teams Player of the Year and Freshman of the Year. He also made 21 tackles, forced a fumble, and broke up a pass. He started 12 of the 14 games he played in 2011. After compiling a career-high 100 tackles, 2.5 tackles for loss, an interception, four pass breakups, a forced fumble, and a blocked kick, he was named a third-team All-MAC selection. He had 104 tackles in 2012, which was the most for the Huskies, including a career-high 14 against Florida State in the Orange Bowl.
