John W. Jenrette Jr., a former representative from South Carolina whose rise to power was overshadowed by scandal, passed away on Friday. Age-wise, he was 86.

Rosemary Jenrette, his wife, announced his passing on Saturday.

The Democratic congressman’s outrageous antics and spectacular fall from grace concealed his common sense and years of dedication to South Carolina. He was considered a potential candidate to lead the House of Representatives of the United States.

Jenrette, who was raised in Conway, South Carolina, graduated from the University of South Carolina School of Law after attending Wofford College. From 1965 to 1972, he represented Myrtle Beach in the state House of Representatives while also working as a businessman, attorney, and municipal judge.

Jenrette was a liberal lawmaker from the conservative Pee Dee who possessed roguish charm and the capacity to close deals. He was chosen three times, in 1974, 1976, and 1978 when he ran unopposed, to serve South Carolina’s 6th Congressional District along the Grand Strand as a Democrat.

According to his wife Rosemary, “The 6th District was his heartbeat,” but “he was as much South Carolina as he was Myrtle Beach.”

Jenrette would later acknowledge her inebriation. He lost his bid for reelection that November and completed 13 months of a two-year prison term.

“Capitol Steps and Missteps: The Wild, Improbable Ride of Congressman John Jenrette” author John Clark, a former aide for Jenrette, said of the candidate: “He had no campaign money and he’d just been convicted three weeks before, but lost by only three percentage points.”

The majority of the people in his district essentially adored him, according to Clark.
