An internal report that identified a conflict of interest regarding decisions he had made regarding a former employee with whom he had a relationship was released hours before a top Swedish police officer was found dead in his home, police said.

Police reported that Mats Löfving, the Norrkoping, Sweden, police superintendent for the Stockholm area, had been discovered dead in his residence. He was 61.

Since the cause of death was not immediately apparent, police started an investigation per protocol.

In a case that shocked Sweden’s police leadership and grabbed headlines across the Scandinavian country, Löfving’s actions were being examined by both an internal audit and a criminal probe.

Later on Wednesday, when police arrived at Löfving’s house in response to a complaint of an injured person, they discovered him dead.

Later, prosecutors declared that they would close the inquiry into serious wrongdoing.
