According to The Guardian, Iranian authorities shot and killed a 27-year-old Iranian man in the city of Bandar-e Anzali for celebrating his country’s World Cup exit. According to human rights groups, Mehran Samak honked his horn in celebration of Iran’s 1-0 loss to the United States in the FIFA World Cup on Tuesday.

In a statement, Iran Human Rights said Samak was “directly targeted and shot in the head by security forces.” Human Rights in Iran (CHRI), a New York-based organization, also reported that Samak was killed while celebrating the World Cup’s loss, according to The Guardian.

There have been nationwide protests and civil unrest in Iran following the death of Mahsa Amini, a 22-year-old woman who died after falling into a coma while in the custody of the country’s morality police. She had been detained because she was not wearing a hijab.

Saeid Ezatolahi, an Iranian midfielder who played in Tuesday’s match, paid tribute to Samak, describing him as a childhood teammate. “The news of your passing has set my heart on fire after last night’s bitter defeat,” Ezatolahi wrote, according to a translation from Gol Bezan. “I haven’t slept since I started writing this story. But, old friend, you must be aware that humanity is dwindling in this world.”
