Bishop Fred A. Caldwell, a longtime Shreveport religious leader, has died, according to Greenwood Acres Full Gospel Baptist Church.

Caldwell was Greenwood Acres’ pastor for nearly 50 years. Prior to that, he served as assistant pastor after a church invitation to speak wowed members. In 1981, he was ordained, and in 1983, he was appointed pastor.

Caldwell’s death was announced by church leaders on Friday morning.

“On behalf of the first family of Greenwood Acres Full Gospel Baptist Church, the officers and members, it is with great sadness that we announce the death of our beloved Pastor/Teacher – Bishop Fred A. Caldwell, Sr. We appreciate all of your thoughts, concerns and prayers. An announcement of a celebration honoring the life of Bishop Caldwell will be shared at a later time.”

Who was Bishop Fred Caldwell?

Bishop Fred  Caldwell  was born on March 20, 1946, at the old Charity hospital in Shreveport, Louisiana, to Mr. Dawkins Caldwell and Mrs. Olive Faye Caldwell. He is the fifth of five children.

His childhood was spent in the Stoner Hill neighborhood of Southeast Shreveport. The rest of his childhood was spent in the El Camino Way Public Housing Project (Jackson Heights Public Housing) in Shreveport’s Allendale neighborhood.

He is married to the former Mary Kornegay, and to this blessed union, two wonderful children were born: Timi D. Caldwell-Dixon and Fred A. Caldwell, II. Allen Jacobe Caldwell, Aaron Joseph Caldwell, and Chase Mikal Dixon are Mary K’s three beautiful grandsons.

Caldwell is well-known among clergy and churchgoers across the country, but he made headlines in 2003 when he boldly declared that he would “pay white people to attend his church.”

Caldwell proposed paying white Christians to attend a predominantly black church in order to draw attention to the history of church segregation in America.

Bishop Caldwell was a community leader who organized food drives and other charitable endeavors throughout Shreveport.
