Scotto died in her hometown Savona on August 16, 2023, at age 89. The reasons for her death are yet to be revealed, she could die from a natural cause.

Scotto was born in Savona, Kingdom of Italy, on February 24, 1934. She made her operatic debut in her hometown on Christmas Eve of 1952 at the age of 18 in front of a sold-out house in the title role of Verdi’s La Traviata. She made her ‘official’ opera debut at the Teatro Nuovo in Milan in the same role the following day. After which she performed in Savona the title role of Puccini’s Madama Butterfly, and was paid twenty-five thousand lire. Both roles would become closely associated with her name.
