In an interview, Serena Williams decided to explain to the world why she decided her daughter’s first doll be black.

Baby Alexis Olympia, the daughter of Serena and mogul Alexis Ohanian, has a doll named Qai Qai.

Qai Qai is not an ordinary doll; the smart, funny and sassy doll is very famous with over 100, 000 followers on Instagram.

The tennis player and female sports icon did a press conference where she asked about the doll, its color, and name.

The 37-year-old took the matter very seriously and had this to say about her “granddaughter,” Qai Qai: “I wanted her to have a black doll. Growing up, I didn’t have that many opportunities to have black dolls. And I was just thinking, like, ‘I want her first doll to be black.’ And her heritage, obviously she’s mixed, she’s Caucasian and black, but I feel like that was her first doll, and I said her second doll would be Caucasian.”

Serena went on to reveal that she wants her daughter to grow up loving all human beings no matter their skin color.

She said: “I definitely want to always teach her love and teach her just basic human — humans should always have love for each other, no matter what color they are.”

Serena explained that her nephew came up with the doll’s name.

The champion sat down Essence magazine last year and said she plans to take her husband and daughter to Africa soon to learn more about her roots.

She shared: “There are so many things I want to teach her about being a Black woman, and I’m proud that I have that opportunity. I was just talking with my husband, Alexis. We were talking about how we want to take her to Africa and show her where she’s from and the strength that she gets from her ancestors. We want her to be able to build and thrive off that strength. And that’s only the beginning of what I want to teach her.”

These are the life lessons that Serena is hoping to teach her little girl: “Believe in yourself, and you can do anything. I feel like if I can do it, anyone can do it. It really is just believing in yourself. I’m no different than anyone else. Really I’m not. I’m just determined and having that work ethic.”
