Michel began his eighth-grade year as the starting running back for the American Heritage Patriots. He rushed for 1,833 yards and 24 touchdowns as a senior. He rushed for 4,758 yards and 63 touchdowns in three years on varsity. Rivals.com rated him as a five-star recruit and ranked him as the third-best running back and the 13th-best player overall.  Michel committed to the University of Georgia to play college football on April 26, 2013.

Michel appeared in eight games and made one start as a true freshman at Georgia in 2014. He was out for five games with a fractured shoulder blade. He rushed for 410 yards and five touchdowns on 64 attempts. Michel began 2015 as a backup to Nick Chubb, but he quickly gained playing time. Michel took over as the starter after Chubb was injured in a game against the Tennessee Volunteers and ran for 145 yards. Michel had 840 rushing yards and four rushing touchdowns in 2016, as well as 22 receptions for 149 yards and a receiving touchdown.
