On July 18, 2014, something truly heartbreaking happened in Tallahassee, Florida. Dan Markel, a well-respected law professor at Florida State University, was found dead in his car. He had been shot in the head, and despite being rushed to the hospital, he didn’t make it. It was a devastating loss for his family, friends, and the academic community.

What makes this even more unsettling is that at the time of the shooting, Markel was on a phone call. During that call, he sounded scared and mentioned seeing someone unfamiliar in his driveway. The conversation became tense and disturbing, with strange noises and Markel’s struggle for breath captured on the call.

To add to the mystery, a neighbor reported hearing what they believed was a gunshot. When they looked outside, they saw a Prius leaving Markel’s driveway. This Prius had apparently been following Markel throughout the day, and this pursuit ended in tragedy that evening.

The CCTV Footage

A shocking twist unfolded in the murder case when surveillance footage showed a Prius waiting for Markel as he left a health club just hours before his tragic death. This same Prius was later spotted tailing Markel back to his Tallahassee home and leaving his driveway after the fatal shooting, solidifying a sinister connection.

To solve the case, the authorities used additional surveillance footage and toll monitoring data to track the rented Prius. It was revealed that the car had been rented just three days prior to the tragic event on July 15, 2014, with Luis Rivera as the renter and Sigfredo Garcia as the co-signer, claiming to be his “brother.”

GPS data showed the Prius had made stops at Magbanua’s residence, the fitness club, and Markel’s home during the rental period, eventually being returned on July 21, 2014.

Phone records added weight to the case, highlighting numerous calls between Magbanua, Garcia, and Charlie Adelson in the months leading up to and following Markel’s death. There were even calls to Harvey Adelson, the father of Charlie and Wendi Adelson, on July 1, 2014, though he remained uncharged in the investigation.

After the murder, the police closely monitored the activities and conversations of Charlie Adelson, Magbanua, and Garcia, slowly uncovering a sinister plot to end Markel’s life. It took until May 2016, almost two years after the crime, for Garcia to be arrested for first-degree murder. In June, a grand jury in Leon County indicted both Garcia and Rivera for their roles in Markel’s murder.

Fast forward to October 1, 2016, when Magbanua was arrested for first-degree murder. In contrast, Rivera chose to plead guilty to second-degree murder three days later, resulting in a 19-year prison sentence. In 2019, Garcia was found guilty of first-degree murder by a jury, while a mistrial was declared in Magbanua’s case.

Due to delays caused by the COVID-19 pandemic, her retrial faced several postponements, eventually concluding in May 2022 when a jury delivered a guilty verdict for first-degree murder, conspiracy, and solicitation.
