Bette Midler was recently chastised for being perhaps (ignorant and offensive) after tweeting that mothers should simply try breastfeeding in the face of a nationwide baby formula shortage.

This tweet was just a comment she passed on Thursday (May 12) in response to MSNBC host Stephanie Ruhle’s post about the baby food shortage.

Many people jumped on the issue, attempting to lash out at the television personality for her comments. However, Midler, who is a mother herself, addressed the backlash about 20 minutes after she shared the contentious post, clarifying that she did not intend to shame those who are unable to breastfeed for various reasons.

She added that mothers’ overdependence on such foods had caused this deficiency and advised that if breastfeeding mothers return to their old ways of feeding their own babies, it will help them and their babies because natural breastfeeding is healthier than the ostensibly scientifically researched baby product.
