Minnie Julia Riperton Rudolph was an American singer-songwriter best known for her 1975 single “Lovin’ You” and her four-octave D3 to F7 coloratura soprano range. She is also well known for her use of the whistle register, and she has been dubbed the “Queen of the Whistle Register” by the media.

Riperton’s first professional singing gig was with The Gems when she was 15 years old. Raynard Miner, a blind pianist, became her musical patron after hearing her singing with Hyde Park’s A Cappella Choir. The Gems had limited commercial success, but they were a good vehicle for Riperton’s talent.
