On April 22, 1937, John Joseph Nicholson was born in Neptune City, New Jersey. He was the son of showgirl June Frances Nicholson. Nicholson’s mother was  Irish, English, German, and Welsh.

In the movie Reds, Nicholson played author Eugene O’Neill; he identified as Irish, saying: “I’m not saying I’m as dark as he was… but I am a writer, I am Irish, and I have had problems with my family.”
