David Americo Ortiz Arias is a retired Dominican-American professional baseball player who played as the Boston Red Sox’s designated hitter in Major League Baseball.

He was born in Saint Domingo, Dominican Republic, to Enrique and Angela Rosa. Ortiz’s father was a baseball player in the Dominican pro and semipro leagues for many years and was an inspiration to him.

Ortiz was the eldest of four siblings. He went to Estudia Espallat High School and was a basketball champion there.

He joined with the Seattle Mariners in 1992 and stayed with them until 1996, when he was traded to the Minnesota Twins. He was formerly known as ‘David Arias,’ but his name was later changed to ‘David Ortiz’.

He was one of the greatest to ever play the game.
