Payne, a Dayton, Ohio native, played for the Spartans from 2010 to 2014, earning second-team All-Big Ten honors his junior and senior seasons.  He was a fierce forward and center back who helped Michigan State reach the Sweet 16 in 2012 and 2013, as well as the Elite Eight in 2014.

The Atlanta Hawks selected him 15th overall in the 2014 NBA Draft, and he was traded to the Minnesota Timberwolves midway through the 2014-15 season.

The Orange County Sheriff’s Office in Florida announced around noon that it responded to a call about a man who had been shot at an unrevealed location. Payne was taken to a nearby hospital and later pronounced dead.
