Michael Jerome Oher, an ex-offensive tackle in American football who was born on May 28, 1986, played eight seasons in the league, most of them with the Baltimore Ravens.

During his first year of high school, Oher participated in football at a Memphis public high school. Tony Henderson, a mechanic with whom he was staying temporarily, recommended him for enrollment at Briarcrest Christian School.

Henderson believed Oher might follow because he was enrolling his son at the school in order to grant the boy’s grandmother’s dying request. Hugh Freeze, the football coach at the school, forwarded Oher’s application to the headmaster, who agreed to allow Oher if he first finished a home study course.

Oher was coached by Freeze and Tim Long, the offensive line coach at Briarcrest. In 2003, he was named Division II (2A) Lineman of the Year and was chosen for the first team of the Tennessee All-State squad.
